Utopai Studios Charts AI-Native Future with 2027 Slate

Utopai Studios is challenging the notion that generative AI in entertainment is limited to short clips and technical demos. With 25 original projects in development and a 2027 slate that includes three feature films and two series, the studio is building what Variety calls the world's largest independent AI-native film and television studio. Forbes estimates its valuation at $1 billion, underscoring investor confidence in its approach.

Launched in August 2025, Utopai Studios integrates AI into the production infrastructure from the outset, but creative decisions remain firmly in human hands. "AI-native does not mean turning creative decisions over to technology," the company emphasizes. Instead, its PAI system supports visual development, scene planning, continuity, video generation, editing, and localization, working alongside established filmmaking tools.

The studio's model addresses a critical gap: most AI applications have focused on short-form experiments, not the sustained character and world-building required for full-length films and series. Utopai Studios is betting that the next phase of AI in entertainment will be defined by finished, audience-ready projects. Its partnerships with major entertainment companies like Huace Film & TV in China and DeNA in Japan provide real-world testing grounds for AI-enabled workflows.

The 2027 slate showcases multiple production models. "Half Moon," a live-action feature directed by Hyo-joo Yang, uses AI selectively for visual elements while remaining grounded in traditional craft. "Cortés," a historical epic written by Oscar-nominated Nicholas Kazan, leverages AI to overcome scale and cost barriers that previously stalled the project. "The Most Serious Fart," an animated children's film, pairs AI with traditional animation disciplines. The series "Space Nation," produced by Ex Machina Studios, has already been picked up by Brazil's Globoplay, marking one of the first AI productions acquired by a traditional buyer. "Journey to the West: The Lost Five Hundred Years," developed with Huace, takes a more fully AI-generated approach to animation.

These projects demonstrate that AI-native storytelling is not a single visual style or formula. By integrating AI into production infrastructure while preserving human creative control, Utopai Studios is positioning itself to deliver ambitious, long-form entertainment across theatrical, broadcast, streaming, and digital platforms. The company's success will be a key test of whether AI can truly enhance storytelling at scale, rather than merely generate isolated clips. With its 2027 slate, Utopai Studios aims to prove that AI-native production can produce finished films and series that stand on their own as entertainment.
