Vme TV Uses Generative AI to Spotlight Hispanic Heroes of the American Revolution

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, a new Spanish-language series is challenging the conventional narrative of the American Revolution by highlighting the contributions of Hispanic and Spanish figures who played critical roles in securing independence. Vme TV’s original short-form series, Aliados por la Libertad, premiered on September 15 for Hispanic Heritage Month and uses generative AI to recreate the world of these often-forgotten historical actors. The series matters because it fills a significant gap in public memory: while names like Washington, Jefferson, and Lafayette are widely known, figures such as Bernardo de Gálvez, Juan de Miralles, and Diego de Gardoqui remain unfamiliar to most Americans, despite their decisive impact on the war.

The implications of this project extend beyond entertainment. By leveraging AI to visualize an 18th-century world spanning colonial New Orleans, Havana, Bilbao, and the Gulf Coast, Vme TV is demonstrating how technology can be used to reconstruct histories that survive primarily through static portraits, maps, and documents. The series is grounded in documented historical research and constructed under human creative direction, ensuring that the technology serves the story rather than overshadowing it. As Michael Fernández, Vice President of Marketing and People at Vme Media, explained, “The technology had to disappear into the story. We don’t want someone watching an episode and thinking about AI. We want them wondering why they never heard this story before.”

Each episode brings to life a different figure. Bernardo de Gálvez, the Spanish governor of Louisiana, led military campaigns at Baton Rouge, Mobile, and Pensacola that denied Britain a southern front against the colonies. Juan de Miralles, a Cuban-born merchant, served as Spain’s informal envoy to the Continental Congress and died in George Washington’s headquarters at Morristown, New Jersey, in 1780. Diego de Gardoqui, a Basque merchant, covertly shipped arms and supplies to the Continental Army while Spain was still officially neutral. Francisco de Miranda, a Venezuelan-born officer, fought at the Siege of Pensacola in 1781 before championing Latin American independence. Jorge Farragut, a Spanish-born sailor, fought at the Siege of Charleston and the Battle of Cowpens and became the father of the first admiral in U.S. Navy history. The series is already expanding: a new episode in production features Felicitas de Saint-Maxent, the New Orleans-born Creole whose marriage to Gálvez connected him to the local society that his Gulf Coast campaigns depended on.

For Vme TV, a premier national Spanish-language television network available in millions of U.S. households, the series represents a commitment to programming that is engaging, empowering, educational, and entertaining. By making this history accessible to Spanish-speaking audiences, Vme is not only celebrating Hispanic heritage but also asserting that Hispanic history is inseparable from American history. As Fernández noted, “Hispanic history isn’t separate from American history. These stories show just how deeply the two have been connected from the beginning.” The series, which premiered on Vme TV and across digital platforms including YouTube and social media, will continue to release new episodes throughout 2026 and into 2027.
