HR.com has released its latest research report, HR.com's Future of HR Skills and Strategies 2025, providing a comprehensive examination of HR's evolving role in strategic business operations. The findings demonstrate that organizations empowering HR with strategic decision-making authority achieve substantially better outcomes, with these organizations being nearly seven times more likely to dedicate significant time to strategic planning and implementation.
The research reveals that organizations with strong HR strategies are more than twice as likely to view HR as an equal partner in strategic processes. However, despite this growing recognition of HR as a strategic asset, the report identifies persistent and substantial skill gaps that hinder HR's effectiveness. Only 38% of HR professionals currently rate their expertise at expert-level proficiency.
Critical competency gaps exist across three key areas according to the research. While 80% of respondents acknowledge that HR data and analytics are essential or important, merely 34% believe HR demonstrates necessary proficiency in this area, representing a 46-point gap. Similarly, 89% view change facilitation as critical, but only 47% consider HR proficient in driving change, creating a 42-point discrepancy.
The most significant gap exists in strategic thinking, where 92% recognize its importance yet only 51% feel HR has achieved high proficiency levels, resulting in a 41-point deficit. Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com, emphasized that these findings highlight the urgent need for HR leaders to not only adapt but lead transformational change within their organizations.
The full research report, available for free download, offers detailed strategies to help HR professionals develop essential competencies and transform HR from primarily administrative functions into strategic leadership roles. The recording of the research webcast presentation, The HR Edge: Winning Strategies for a Disruptive Future, is also available for on-demand viewing, providing additional insights into addressing these critical skill gaps.
